Jun 07, 2026"England, I have arrived. My first proper chippy experience! I’d had my eye on Pete’s Plaice for a while, and on one of my walks I happened to end up nearby. With my stomach growling, I thought — why not? I met Pavan and Shree, and when I told them I was visiting, it almost felt like I’d stepped into an MI6 interview room. In the best way though — they were curious, welcoming, and full of stories. We ended up chatting in a mix of Hindi, Urdu, and English. Shree dropped a fresh cod into the fryer, and when it came out it was golden-crisp on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender inside. Of course, my South Asian instincts kicked in and I asked for reinforcements — pepper, vinegar, hot sauce — just to make sure my taste buds knew the British conquest wasn’t in vain. (That said, with a sensitive stomach, I had to go easy on the spice.) Pavan kindly brought out all the condiments and even slipped me a drink on the house, which was a lovely touch. For £10.99 / $14.90 (chippies are swimming upstream like salmon these days), the light flaky fish paired perfectly with the hefty chips. When I was ordering, I’d been glancing at the prices for what must have been the small or medium portions, but the server asked if I wanted large and I just went along with it. Let’s just say when the plate arrived, I felt my waist belt loosen a notch all by itself. Generous, filling, and absolutely worth it. I sat outside at the lone desk in the drizzle, enjoying hot fish and chips in true British weather. Good thing my phone is water resistant, because I wrote this review walking back in the rain."
